Genomic data analysis: Learning from the best

Rusnano and Skoltech have launched a new educational program

Rusnano Press CenterWith the support of the Rusnano Foundation for Infrastructure and Educational Programs, a practical educational course "Genomic Data Analysis" for employees of innovative companies and scientific organizations has been launched in Russia.

The Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programs was established in 2010 in accordance with Federal Law No. 211-FZ "On the Reorganization of the Russian Nanotechnology Corporation". The purpose of the Foundation's activities is to develop innovative infrastructure in the field of nanotechnology, including the implementation of educational and infrastructure programs already started by RUSNANO.

From July 2 to 11, Russia's first educational course "Genomic Data Analysis" is being held in the Moscow region with the participation of teachers from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (USA). The participants of the program were 16 Russian specialists from RUSNANO design companies, other innovative companies and research laboratories interested in using bioinformatics in their work. The aim of the course is to quickly acquire practical competencies in this field by Russian specialists.

The educational course in Russia is conducted by scientists who have created and annually organize this course at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL). CSHL is the most successful scientific and educational center of the biomedical field, which consistently ranks first in the Thomson Reuters ranking for publications in the field of molecular biology and genetics.

More than four hundred CHSL researchers work in such fields as neurophysiology, cancer diagnosis and treatment, plant biology and the development of new types of biofuels. During the existence of the laboratory, eight Nobel Prize laureates have worked in it. In addition to research, CSHL is known for its conferences and training programs, which are attended annually by more than 12,500 scientists from around the world.

The Russian course is conducted in full accordance with the curriculum of the CSHL course, which includes lectures and practical classes in the field of analysis and interpretation of data obtained using highly efficient DNA sequencing methods.

The use of modern methods of genomic data analysis makes it possible to achieve qualitative progress in fundamental and applied biomedical research and development, including areas such as personal medicine and pharmacology, agriculture and the food industry.

116 applications from 12 cities of Russia were submitted for the competitive selection of participants of the program. The decision to enroll in the course was made by the leaders of the CSHL course. The main selection criteria were the applicants' scientific level and the expected effect of the acquired skills in their practical activities. Due to the financial participation of the project partners, the program for Russian students will cost twice less than a similar course in the USA.

The course is organized by the Training Center of the Gene Biology Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the financial support of the RUSNANO Foundation for Infrastructure and Educational Programs, the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology Skoltech, the Dynasty Foundation for Non-Profit Programs and InterLabService LLC.

The practical educational course "Analysis of genomic data" demonstrates the integration of education and research, as well as the withdrawal of research beyond the boundaries of individual disciplines – elements of a new model of the Russian scientific and educational institute, which is being developed by Skoltech.
