The tissues of all Danes will be preserved in a biobank

Denmark has opened a biobank for storing genetic information of citizens

RIA NewsDenmark has announced the opening of a national biobank, which today combines about 7 million samples of living tissues stored in freezing; scientists plan to use the biomaterial for research of genetic diseases common among Danes, according to the Internet portal Sciencenordium (New biobank will make research easier – VM).

The database of the Danish National Biobank, which was brought together by specialists from the Danish Serum Institute in Copenhagen (SSI), contains tissue samples collected over the past decades from all Danes, citizens of Iceland and the Faroe Islands, as well as about 30% of the population of Greenland – among the samples, for example, blood tests of all children born in Denmark in recent years 30 years old. The biomaterial is accompanied by complete information about relatives, medical history and treatment of these people. According to experts, this database will expand the study of genetic abnormalities and diseases, the report says.

"This biobank is unique because it contains tissue samples of all residents of the country... At the same time, we can say that we are not interested in individual people as scientists – the main value is a large, diverse genetic material for study," said the author of the project, Professor SSI Mads Melby, whose words are given in the message.

According to him, the main idea of creating such a biofund is to provide researchers with access to biological samples that doctors receive and store during the treatment of patients. Scientists of the country can freely access the accumulated constantly replenishing genetic material.

The biobank is designed to store up to 15 million samples, for which special freezers with a length of 19 meters are designed.

A special building will be built for the bank – an additional building in the SSI complex. Today, its funds contain from 5 to 6 million samples, which are replenished daily by another thousand copies.
