Graduate students and postdocs, as well as more mature scientists, including professors and heads of laboratories, study at the courses.

The courses are held with "full immersion" (10-12 hours of work per day for two weeks). Each working day consists of practical work on the most modern equipment with the development of the latest practical techniques on the topic of a particular course, as well as lectures given by invited specialists (prominent scientists, developers of the latest equipment and other specialists).

During the 50 years of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory courses, many outstanding scientists took part in them (both as students and as teachers), some of them later became Nobel laureates.

The courses of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the European Molecular Biology Organization cover most topics of modern biology: from molecular genetics to embryology and computer modeling.

The courses are very popular, and the number of places in them is strictly limited (usually a group consists of 16-20 people). Therefore, participants have to undergo a very strict selection process, which is carried out by instructors of each specific course — prominent scientists in this field of science.
Instructors are guided, first of all, by the applicant's scientific level and how convincingly he can explain why participation in the training will allow him to make significant progress in solving both current and long-term scientific tasks.
The courses train specialists working in different scientific fields, from different countries, of all ages.

Most of the participants pay for their participation in the courses, as well as for the flight to the place of study (usually payment is made from laboratory grants).
An exception is made only for the most outstanding and needy applicants, but the number of scholarships is limited (one or two per course).
The tuition fee (from $2000 to $4000 depending on the course) includes accommodation, meals and the actual training (including printed materials).

The vast majority of scientists who have completed the courses consider them one of the most important stages of their professional development.
In addition to the actual professional skills, program participants acquire the necessary contacts in the scientific community, get acquainted with leading scientists. These scientific connections help them develop and carry out new projects throughout their scientific life.
Everyone who studies in laboratories has the opportunity to hold a seminar on their project, which allows you to get valuable recommendations necessary for the successful completion of the work.
