Competition for German-Russian research projects

The Foundation for Assistance to the Development of Small Forms of Enterprises in the Scientific and Technical Sphere, together with the International Bureau (IB) of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Technology of Germany, announces the beginning of the collection of proposals for joint German-Russian research projects in the field of applied research focused on production, as well as the organization of cooperation of small and medium-sized enterprises in scientific and technical sphere.

The competition is addressed primarily to German and Russian small and medium-sized innovative enterprises actively engaged in research, as well as German and Russian research institutions conducting applied research.

The purpose of the supporting events is the implementation of joint German-Russian projects thematically aimed at priority, from the point of view of the German and Russian sides, technologies of the future.

Support is provided to German-Russian research projects in the following thematic areas:

• Biotechnology and medical research– Genomics

– Postgenomics and proteomics technologies
– Medical technologies

• Nanotechnology– Nanoceramics

– Biocompatible and biofunctional materials
– Biomimetic materials
– Modern functional materials, surfaces and coatings
– Additives to toxic substances or rare elements

• Optical technologies– The latest photonic materials for light guiding and manipulation of light interaction

– Devices for micro– and nanophotonics, including applications to innovative light sources and photodetectors
– The latest optical glass fibers, glass fiber components and optical systems based on glass fibers

• Information and communication technologies (ICT)– ICT for design/automation: monitoring and control of processes, embedded systems;

– ICT for healthcare: telemedicine, intelligent systems for hospital patients, new diagnostic technologies, self-sufficient monitoring and warning systems for high-risk patients
– Human–Machine interaction: interaction with ICT systems through voice, gestures, facial expressions and touch;
– ICT for logistics and services: real-time management, automatic storage systems, telematics

• Microsystem technologies in production and engineering processes, as well as in healthcare• Environmental protection technologies

– Integrated environmental protection system in industrial production

– Technologies for climate protection, energy efficiency and reduction of CO2 emissions
– Efficiency of the use of raw materials, waste recycling, closed production cycles
– Water technologies, use of water resources

Projects in other thematic areas can receive funding only in exceptional cases. A prerequisite is the high quality of the proposal provided and the availability of an appropriate budget, after the Assistance Fund and the International Bureau of the BMBF will conduct an examination of proposals corresponding to priority topics.

The application can be submitted by a consortium consisting of at least two partners (one each from the Russian and German sides) who belong to one of the following groups:

From the Russian side:– small innovative enterprises.

From the German side:– small and medium-sized innovative enterprises;

– university and non-university public or private institutions engaged in applied research.

The consortium, consisting of applicants from the German and Russian sides, submits a joint application simultaneously to the International Bureau of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Technology of Germany and to the Russian Foundation for the Promotion of Small Enterprises in the Scientific and Technical Field until July 15, 2010.

To implement the project, applicants can request a maximum amount of 4,000,000 rubles for a period of two years or 2,000,000 rubles for a period of one year (subject to the proportional size of the request from the partner in Germany).

Attention! A prerequisite for participation, both for Russian and German companies, is to provide co-financing from their own or attracted sources in the amount of at least 100% of the requested amount.

The application is submitted electronically to the Russian Foundation for Assistance to the Development of Small Forms of Enterprises in the Scientific and Technical Field in the name of Olga Levchenko (levchenko@fasie.net ) in Russian (from Russian applicants) and to the International Bureau (IB) of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Technology of Germany (from German applicants)– in German.
