Critical mass of competencies

The center was created with the aim of forming and developing the ecosystem of the Skolkovo Innovation Center for the successful development and implementation of technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of oncological diseases.

Currently, about a quarter of the companies in the biomedical cluster of the Skolkovo Foundation are engaged in developments in the field of oncology. Most of them are engaged in pharmaceutical developments, including targeted and immunotherapy, other focus areas are new solutions in diagnostics and personalized treatment selection, cellular technologies, medical devices.

Over the past three years, in cooperation with partners, Skolkovo has implemented a number of educational initiatives and events for startups and the professional community, the almanac "Innovations in Oncology" has been published, the presentation of which took place at the Open Innovations Forum. The competitive selection of OncoBioMed projects has already been successfully carried out twice, the winners of which received the support of the Skolkovo Foundation.

Kirill Kayem, Vice President, Executive Director of the biomedical technologies cluster of the Skolkovo Foundation: "Today, the BMT cluster supports more than 60 startups in the field of oncology and their number is constantly growing. The allocation of the Competence Center will allow better coordination of work with projects, establish horizontal relationships between developers from different companies and research groups. We will also be able to optimize work with specialized associations and clinical institutes, both in Russia and abroad."

Kristina Khodova, Head of the Competence Center in Oncology of the Biomedical Technologies Cluster of the Skolkovo Foundation: "In order to face serious challenges in the fight against cancer, it is necessary to consolidate the efforts of experts from various fields. The creation of a Center where we plan to unite on one platform all participants in the R&D process and commercialization of its results, from scientists to business representatives, is our feasible contribution to the development of new technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. We have accumulated a critical mass of competencies and we want to develop further."

Oncological diseases are one of the most significant problems of global health. About 14 million new cases are detected annually in the world. More than 3 million patients are registered in Russia and their number is growing. In the structure of mortality of the Russian population, malignant neoplasms occupy the second place after cardiovascular diseases.

Economic losses are associated with significant social security and insurance costs due to the high cost of treatment, preventive and rehabilitation measures, prolonged, often irreversible, disability.

In recent years, significant progress has been made in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of many types of oncological diseases. The survival rate of patients is growing due to the introduction of new diagnostic and treatment technologies. Meanwhile, the number of unresolved problems and the level of medical needs in this area remain high. Moreover, the fight against oncological diseases is a versatile task, for the successful solution of which multiple competencies are required.
