Doctor and laboratory in your pocket

The Skolkovo Foundation announces the selection of the best concept
to create a mobile diagnostic device!

Offer the best technical concept of a device that can detect a whole set of diseases without the participation of a doctor! The device should be easy to use, not requiring reading long and boring instructions, lightweight and mobile so that it can be carried with you.

So far, similar devices can only be seen in science fiction films, but recent advances in biosensors, cloud diagnostics and miniaturization make the development of such a device a very real task.

Any team consisting of technical and medical scientific specialists can take part in the Selection.

The team that proposed the best solution will receive a prize of up to 9 million rubles and the opportunity to work in Skolkovo to create a device that the whole world is waiting for!

Skolkovo M.D. (Skolkovo Mobile Diagnostic) is an opportunity for continuous monitoring of basic medical indicators, such as arterial blood pressure, electrocardiography, temperature and more. In addition, the mobile device should diagnose anemia, urinary tract infections, diabetes mellitus, heart rhythm disorders and a number of other diseases.

Applications for participation in the Selection are accepted until June 2, 2012.

The semi–final of the Selection (evaluation of applications by the expert selection panel) will be held on June 2 – July 3, 2012.

Announcement of the finalists of the Selection – August 1, 2012.

Presentation of the device concept – August 2 – November 2, 2012.

The winner will be determined on December 12, 2012.

Details of the Selection process and conditions can be found in the Regulations on the Procedure for Selecting Concepts. Including such conditions:

4. Selection Requirements for the MDU Concept4.1. General characteristics of the MDU, the development of which should be provided for by the Concept:

  • The device must be designed for indoor and outdoor use and be able to operate autonomously for at least two hours;
  • MDU is designed to diagnose diseases and monitor the condition of the Consumer;
  • All actions performed by the MDU, including analysis and diagnosis of the Consumer's health status, do not imply the participation of anyone other than the Consumer himself;
  • The total weight of the MDU, including all components, should not exceed 1.5 kg.

4.2. Of primary (but not exclusive) interest are MDAS that allow:
4.2.1. Diagnose the Consumer's diseases (determine the degree of probability of the presence of the disease) according to the following list of clinical conditions:

  • Anemia;
  • Urinary tract infections;
  • Diabetes Mellitus;
  • Cardiac arrhythmias;
  • Angina pectoris;
  • Acute and Exacerbation of chronic Pharyngitis;
  • Sleep apnea;
  • Melanoma;
  • COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease);
  • Hypothyroidism/Hyperthyroidism;
  • Absence of diseases from the above list.

4.2.2. Display the results of registration of the main medical indicators to the Consumer and upload the measurement results on an ongoing basis to the cloud data storage. MDU should measure the following indicators (minimum required):

IndicatorMeasurement frequency Arterial blood pressure
More than 100 HzElectrocardiography
More than 250 HzTemperature
More than 0.5 HzRespiratory rate
More than 18 HzPulse oximetry
More than 0.5 HzPeak exhalation rate

4.3. The Selection Participant may propose diagnostics or measurements of any other indicators, providing sufficient evidence of validation of measurements.
