HHMI grants for young biologists and physicians

Howard Hughes Medical Institute has launched a new program to support young scientists. The laureates are waiting for 650 thousand dollars for 5 years and the possibility of extending the grant for another 5 years
<url>On December 1, 2010, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute launched an international competition, during which 35 young scientists working in the field of biology and medicine in scientific institutes of 18 countries of the world will be selected.

The purpose of the new competition organized by HHMI (The Howard Hughes Medical Institute) is to help talented people who have previously studied in the USA to carry out independent research projects.

"Science is an international enterprise, and HHMI is committed to helping the next generation of scientific talent around the world," said Robert Tjian, president of this organization. – "We are especially interested in helping scientists at the beginning of their scientific careers, when they are just starting to organize their own research groups and it is difficult for them to get support for their research."

Edwin W. McCleskey, an employee of the Institute, noted that the new competition is a real experiment: "We want to see if our participation can help young scientists in different countries of the world."

It is planned that the Hughes Institute will spend 24 million US dollars on a new program to support young scientists. Within 5 years, each winner of this competition will receive a total of 650 thousand dollars. So, during the first year, 250 thousand dollars will be allocated to the laureates, and then 100 thousand US dollars will be transferred to them annually for four years. The laureates will also be invited to scientific events with the participation of HHMI researchers and their young colleagues. Upon successful completion of five-year projects, the winners of the competition will also be able to apply for the extension of financial support for their scientific programs for another 5 years. Thus, the total period of possible support from HHMI may be 10 years.

The competition is open to scientists who have been trained in the USA, have been leading research groups for no more than 7 years and work in one of 18 countries on 5 continents. Potential candidates can live in Argentina, Brazil, Hungary, Egypt, India, Spain, Italy, China, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Taiwan, Turkey, Czech Republic, Chile, South Africa, South Korea. According to HHMI experts, all these countries have a developed scientific infrastructure to provide the necessary support to young scientists.

This competition will be a good addition to the competition of young scientists working in the USA initiated in 2008, where 50 young scientists can apply for financial support from HHMI every year.

The competition began on December 1, 2010 and will end on February 23, 2011. The Hughes Institute invites those young scientists who meet the above requirements to take part in the competition. To do this, you need to register and fill out the application form.

Applications of potential candidates will be evaluated by a panel of outstanding researchers in the field of biomedicine. Finalists will be invited to a seminar (HHMI's Janelia Farm Research Campus) in November 2011, which will be held in Ashburn, Virginia (USA). There, young scientists will present their applications to experts and other participants of the competition.

We thank the molecular biologist, D.B.N. K. Severinov for the information provided.
