Creams with hormones: myths and truth

Creams and serums with hormones are one of the main "horror stories" of the cosmetic market: it is believed that they can cause tumors or increase the vegetation on a woman's body. We decided to find out if this is true or not. The composition of such funds was carefully studied by the correspondent of Vesti FM Marina Kostyukevich.

"Miracle cream", "legend serum", "a tool that turns back time" – these tricks of advertisers no longer affect the consumer. It is important for a woman to know how these funds differ from others and what they contain that can give a noticeable effect. One of the main advertising "enticements" today is hormones. There is a constant debate around such cosmetics: whether hormones are needed or not, whether they return youth or, conversely, only harm. It is pointless to discuss this, says dermatocosmetologist, medical director of the company "Meso-expert" Margarita Egorova, because hormones are contained only in pharmacological preparations:

"There are pharmacopoeial hormonal jellies in the form of a gel that is applied to the surface of the skin, for example, during menopause or other hormonal problems. There is a huge level of hormones, a special transport system so that this gel penetrates into the body. There can be no hormones in ordinary creams."

To put it in plain language, hormones are active substances in the body that affect the vital activity of cells of the whole body. They are produced by the pancreas, adrenal glands, hypothalamus, pituitary gland and other organs. And you can't just take them and add them to cosmetics. Moreover, it is prohibited, explains the executive director of the Association of Manufacturers of Perfumes, cosmetics and Household Chemicals Peter Bobrovsky:

"There shouldn't be any hormones in cosmetics, otherwise it's not cosmetics anymore. Because there is a clear definition of cosmetic products in the technical regulations, and there are no hormones in this list."

But they can be replaced by phytohormones, for example, phytoestrogens, or plant stem cells, explains Margarita Egorova:

"They don't do any harm. Firstly, it is a cream, its ingredients very conditionally penetrate into the skin, do not affect the body in such doses in any way. If you moisturize and nourish the skin, then this is only good. Human stem cells are prohibited, only plant stem cells can be used in cosmetics. Or, say, animal or fish origin. I know, for example, that good lines work with stem cells, they produce high-quality textural creams, but no one has become a goat."

Although some unscrupulous manufacturers promise that it is their funds that work wonders. This will scare some of the consumers away, and on the contrary, it will attract someone. Both are wrong, says Peter Bobrovsky. The so-called "hormonal cosmetics" do not have any serious effect on health:

"Most likely, manufacturers are trying to give cosmetics some medicinal properties. In fact, it's either a publicity stunt. Or they pass off medicinal properties as cosmetic."

Exaggerate the possibilities of creams and serums is not necessary, it's just skin care products, experts remind. They cannot cause cancer, hormonal disruptions in the body or increase the vegetation on the body and face. The most they can do is cause allergies. Or they will be useless at all. Among the positive effects are soaked epidermis and moisturized skin. But they are not a remedy for old age.
