Omega-3s don't help with depression either

Omega-3 fatty acids are useless for depression

It is believed that taking them helps to keep the heart healthy, and also prevents the development of diabetes, age-related brain changes and mental illness. The results of some studies indicate that regular use of these supplements improves the condition of patients with depression.

However, researchers from Bournemouth University, led by Catherine Appleton, found that, despite the obvious benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for health, their use in depression does not make sense.

People suffering from depression feel depressed, lose interest in life and habitual activities.

Scientists studied data on 1,458 patients with depression who took supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids, or placebo. It turned out that taking dietary supplements only slightly improved the condition of patients.

The researchers emphasize that omega-3 fatty acids practically do not affect the course of depression, which is why it makes no sense to prescribe these supplements for the treatment of such disorders.

Article by Appleton et al. Omega-3 fatty acids for depression in adults is published in The Cochrane Library – VM.
