AI-diagnostician: the first in Russia, the second in the world

By the end of 2014, the Aimedika Medical Decision Support System (SPPVR), created by Intelmed LLC, which is managed by the Lomonosov Capital Venture Fund (RATM Holding asset), will be tested at the Vashe Zdorovye clinic.
Aimedika is the first in Russia and the second in the world development on the use of artificial intelligence in medicine.
Its closest analogue is the IBM Watson project, however, unlike it, the Novosibirsk system contains a number of fundamentally new scientific and technological solutions (in 2013 Aimedika became a diploma winner of the Russian stage of the IBM SmartCamp competition).
According to the Chairman of the Board of Directors of LLC Lomonosov Capital Management Company, Candidate of Technical Sciences Evgeny Geisler, the Aimedika SPD includes information about diseases and their corresponding symptoms, for which it gives patients a list of the most likely diagnoses, based on 22 million scientific articles on medical topics (including the most complete English-language text database PubMed publications) and the results of clinical practice. Also, the SPVR covers a variety of background information that helps doctors to prescribe an examination and treatment plan for the patient.
– Aimedica is not an automatic system, but a human–machine system, - emphasizes Evgeny Geisler.
Aimedika does not require entering a long list of data about the patient: it is enough to indicate his gender, age, complaints, the results of an objective examination, as well as laboratory and instrumental studies, risk factors (from a life history). If necessary, in the course of an intellectual dialogue with the user doctor, the SPD recommends that he receive answers to additional questions from the patient. The service will reduce the time of diagnosis, as well as increase its reliability, since it takes into account world medical statistics. In addition, it is provided that the results of clinical practice accumulated in a medical institution can be entered into the database of the SPD, which is self-learning.
– In fact, Aimedika imitates the work of a doctor at the initial appointment, – explains Evgeny Geisler. – Currently, algorithms have already been compiled for the diagnosis of 245 diseases for 2 thousand symptoms. Our next step is to test the system by the end of the year, expanding the list of diseases to 3.5 thousand, and symptoms to 5-6 thousand (Lomonosov Capital signed an agreement on the use of Aimedics in a test mode with the clinic "Your Health" and the company M–Germ – manufacturer of medical information systems). Then we will start making applications for preventive examinations.
The program will be adjusted in accordance with the qualification characteristics of hospital and polyclinic staff. Currently, specialists are developing versions of the Aimedika SPD for therapists, psychiatrists, infectious disease specialists and emergency physicians.
