In the city of Dubna, Moscow region, the Rusnano portfolio company Bebig LLC has launched the production of full-cycle micro sources for low-dose brachytherapy using the isotope iodine-125.

The project is a joint venture of the European Eckert Group of companies & Ziegler BEBIG and Rusnano. The total investment in the project amounted to 688 million rubles, including co-financing of Rusnano in the amount of 496 million rubles.

Brachytherapy is a modern high–tech type of radiotherapy aimed, among other things, at the treatment of prostate cancer. Brachytherapy can significantly minimize the side effects characteristic of remote radiotherapy: isotopes used for treatment are delivered directly to the tumor without affecting adjacent tissues and organs.

Today, prostate cancer is among the most common oncological diseases among Russian men: about 14 thousand Russians are diagnosed with it every year. At the same time, the mortality rate in the first year from the moment of diagnosis is 10.3%. For patients with stage I and II cancer, brachytherapy is a particularly gentle alternative to surgery and external irradiation.

Despite the fact that brachytherapy has been actively used in world practice in recent years – this procedure is successfully used in 800 medical centers in the USA and Western Europe – in Russia this method is still far from widespread.

The Rusnano project promotes import substitution in the field of high-tech medical products. Until recently, micro sources supplied by Bebig LLC were manufactured in Germany by Eckert & Ziegler BEBIG. Since 2005, more than seven thousand operations have been performed with their help in 21 medical centers in Russia. The complex built in Dubna is a unique and the only production of micro-sources for full-cycle brachytherapy in Russia and will allow the Bebig company to switch to using domestic products in the near future.

Micro sources are a titanium capsule that provides excellent biocompatibility and ultrasound imaging. Inside it is a gold wire – an X-ray marker and the radionuclide iodine-125 in the form of silver iodide.

Modern high-tech production processes are carried out in clean rooms that are certified according to the ISO 8 category (GOST R ISO 14644). Isotopes are obtained at the Research Institute of Nuclear Reactors in the city of Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk region.
