The level of development of science and new technologies in the regions of Russia
The study takes into account regional indicators of investments in science and technology, innovative activity of enterprises and human resources spent in the regions on scientific activities.
In the process of creating the rating, the indicators of 2013 for 80 subjects of the Russian Federation were analyzed.
Moscow, St. Petersburg and the Nizhny Novgorod Region are leading in the ranking. The primacy of the two capitals in the ranking is quite predictable – the historically developed powerful scientific base, large financial resources, industrial production and design centers have determined the leadership of these cities. The third place of the Nizhny Novgorod region is also caused by the high scientific potential of the region in combination with the presence of developing and knowledge-intensive nuclear, military-industrial, automotive, petrochemical segments of the economy. Kaluga Region takes the 6th place in the rating.
According to RIA Rating experts, the high places in the rating of most regions are due to two factors – firstly, the presence of universities, academic towns, science towns, various research institutes, design bureaus, NGOs that provide a theoretical basis for innovative and technological development. Secondly, the presence in the region of a historically developed high-tech nuclear and military industry by any world standards, or with the functioning of special economic zones and relatively new automotive clusters, which provide a platform for the implementation of theoretical research in practice.
