BiotechMed: GenerationS has selected the best biotech and medical startups in Russia

techstartrussia.ruOn September 23, Tomsk hosted the Demo Day of the BiotechMed track of the federal GenerationS accelerator competition.

The selection of ten projects that will go to Moscow for a coaching session and a meeting with Russian and international investors became the final point of the cycle of events of the BiotechMed track.

BiotechMed events have been held since May and included a regional road-show of track experts and the collection of applications, an independent examination of the announced projects, a comprehensive pre-acceleration program, expert selection of projects for passage to the accelerator, a 17-day acceleration program and a Demo Day – selection of finalist projects whose fate will be decided in Moscow.

Demo Day was held at the site of the international forum "Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices". Participants of BiotechMed GenerationS presented their projects to experts and investors from the RVC Seed Investment Fund, the Skolkovo Foundation, R&D Capital, Starta Capital, i-Accelerator, Kama Investment Management, Bioprocess Capital Partners and others.

– Demo Day is the final point of the educational program of the BiotechMed track, but at the same time it is also the starting point: now startups will have to independently win a place in the competitive field of high–tech business, – said Olga Babkina, Deputy Vice-Rector for Research at TSU. – But not only semi-finalist startups, but also the organizers and mentors of the project passed the "school" for two weeks. The acceleration program that Tomsk State University implemented together with its partner, a Russian venture company, showed new opportunities in the preparation of high–tech projects, which is especially valuable for the biotechnology and medicine industries. We are waiting for the results of the GenerationS final in Moscow.

According to the results of the Demo Day, a qualified jury determined the 10 best projects:

  • Eye therapeutic ion-exchange lenses for the treatment of injuries, burns and infectious eye lesions (Kemerovo)

– In the final of the Demo Day, those projects that seemed most interesting to investors were selected. This means that they are ready to consider investments in them in the near future," explained Gulnara Bikkulova, Director of RVC's Innovation Markets Department. – However, among those who did not make it to the top ten, there are projects that will also become interesting to investors after a while. Now they need to work out business plans, attract partners, check business models.

Accelerator experts noted the high investment attractiveness of the projects presented at the Demo Day of the BiotechMed track. At the same time, many expressed the opinion that for most startups, the accelerator has become a vital stage of development.

– The purpose of the BiotechMed accelerator was to select the best innovative ideas and help projects find flaws and weaknesses that need to be corrected, – commented Professor Galina Makarova, medical consultant (USA). – The project is a piece product, it is important to pay attention to each individually, to understand how to develop and position it in order to create a commercial product for implementation on the market.

It should be recalled that developers of 40 projects from all over Russia, selected from 323 applicants, took part in the BiotechMed GenerationS acceleration program.

The program was an educational intensive with lectures and master classes from more than 80 Russian and international experts. Within its framework, 8 meetings and teleconferences with Russian and international investors were held, integration with RVC projects was carried out – Talk2VC platform for communication of investors and entrepreneurs (together with RusBase), a platform for professional communication of partners and mentors of leading accelerators, Accelerator Day (together with RAVI), as well as with the international forum Triple Helix.
