A patch with microneedles treats baldness

The new development of Chinese scientists from Zhejiang University differs from other treatment strategies in that it targets two main causes of baldness at once – oxidative stress and insufficient blood circulation. They have developed a patch with microneedles that promises to treat male and female pattern baldness. The results of the study are published in the journal ACS Nano (Yuan et al., Ceria Nanozyme-Integrated Microneedles Reshape the Perifollicular Microenvironment for Androgenetic Alopecia Treatment), a press release Treating the ‘root’ cause of baldness with a dissolvable microneedle patch - on the website of the American Chemical Society.

Microneedle technology involves a minimally invasive way of delivering cerium-containing nanoparticles to the hair roots deep under the skin to stimulate growth, scientists explain. The choice in favor of cerium is based on previous studies that have determined its effectiveness in reducing the level of oxidative stress.

Testing of the patch on mouse models with hereditary alopecia showed very impressive results. Even in a short time, scientists have noted signs of new hair growth and a decrease in the level of oxidative stress in the scalp.

It is noteworthy that the regenerative effect was achieved faster compared to the already available drug minoxidil and completely restored the hair on bald spots.

"Although there is still a lot of work to be done, a patch with microneedles may become a promising new tool for the safe and effective treatment of baldness in humans," the authors concluded.

Recently, Japanese researchers have concluded that baldness occurs due to atypical division of hair follicle stem cells. Their discovery explains why hair follicles lose their ability to repair hair over time.
