Prostate cancer will be operated on with a nanopod

Americans will test "nanonozhe" in the treatment of prostate cancer

Copper newsThe US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has allowed the use of a device called "Nanonife" (NanoKnife) for the treatment of prostate cancer as part of clinical trials.

This is reported by Medgadget (NanoKnife for Electric Execution of Tumors Gets FDA Approval for IDE Study).

Such permission is usually given by an expert committee in order to collect data on the safety and effectiveness of the device. In this case, the FDA allowed the use of a "nanonife" manufactured by AngioDynamics for the treatment of prostate cancer.

The principle of operation of the device is based on the method of irreversible electroporation (IRE, from the English irreversible electroporation). Guiding electrodes are used to conduct IRE, through which high-voltage discharges are supplied to the tumor. Discharges lead to a significant increase in the permeability of the membranes of tumor cells, as a result of which ions of various compounds penetrate into the cell. All this leads to irreversible changes in the cell and its subsequent death.

It is planned that in addition to clinical trials in the United States, the safety and effectiveness of the "NANONOG" will be confirmed during European studies. They will be held in six European clinics with the participation of 200 patients.

Previously, IRE was successfully used to treat patients with primary and metastatic liver tumors, and also helped patients with inoperable pancreatic cancer.
