RUSNANO's new plans

The Supervisory Board of RUSNANO at the next meeting approved the Corporation's participation in new investment projects. Their total budget exceeded 11 billion rubles, including co-financing from RUSNANO of more than 3 billion rubles.

As part of the new RUSNANO medical project, it is planned to establish the production of four innovative oncological drugs. All drugs use new, hitherto unused methods of fighting cancer. The applicant was a public American company. The project involves the participation of such well-known medical research institutions as Roswell Park Cancer Institute (USA), Cleveland Clinic Foundation (USA) and Children's Cancer Institute Australia. Russian research organizations and pharmaceutical companies will be involved in the implementation of the project in Russia on a contractual basis. By 2015, the drugs are planned to be brought to the Russian market, the volume of which in this segment is projected to be about 40 billion rubles by this time. They will fill the empty niche of domestic innovative cancer drugs today. The development of drugs is planned according to a new business model, according to which the registration of drugs in Russia will be followed by clinical trials in the United States on an accelerated schedule. This will allow the project company to enter the world market with innovative anti-cancer drugs, the volume of which in 2009 amounted to about $ 50 billion.

As part of another project approved by the supervisory Board, the production of transdermal therapeutic systems-patches capable of delivering various medicinal substances (insulin, propranolol, acetylsalicylic acid, chlorpropamide, lidocaine, caffeine, testosterone, acizol) to the body through the skin will be created. The project also involves the production of biocompatible implants for replacement and reconstructive surgery, which will be widely used in the replacement of soft and cartilaginous tissue defects (restoration of partially lost organs after removal of cancerous tumors), postoperative rehabilitation of patients (effective healing of sutures), as well as traumatology and cosmetology. The project is headed by Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Viktor Sevastyanov, Head of the Biomaterials Research Department of the Federal State University "Scientific Research Institute of Transplantology and Artificial Organs named after V.I.Shumakov" and Director of the ANO "Institute of Biomedical Research and Technology". It is assumed that the medicinal patches produced under the project will occupy in their market segments from 1% (transdermal anti-inflammatory drugs) to 30% (the market of transdermal local painkillers). The estimated market share of the SpherOGEL implant is up to 20%, implantable ElastoPOB membranes – up to 15% in the relevant market segments. It should be noted that the project is aimed at combating socially significant diseases: diabetes of both types, cardiac arrhythmia, thrombosis, as well as postoperative rehabilitation of patients, including cancer patients, rehabilitation of disabled people with serious spinal cord injuries.

Another project in the field of medicine is aimed at expanding the existing production and development of a marketing system for medical coatings for wounds, bedsores and burns "LOCUS" with nanoscale particles. Work on the creation of coatings began 20 years ago at the FSB Military Medical Institute. Clinical studies were conducted in leading research institutions - the Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery, the N.V. Sklifosovsky Institute of Medical Care and the I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy. Compared with standard dressings, "LOCUS" coatings reduce the treatment time of patients from an average of 28 to 16 days. The nanocrystalline boehmite used in the material has high bactericidal and sorption properties, provides thermal insulation and increases the gas permeability of the dressing. Due to its high efficiency in the treatment of wounds, burns and bedsores, the project is of great social importance.

Another project approved by the supervisory board involves the creation of a new generation of special plastics used for lining car interiors and manufacturing housings of household electronic appliances. ABS (acrylonitrile, butadiene, styrene) – plastics produced using nanotechnology have higher strength and heat resistance, are technologically advanced in processing and can also be used in medicine, construction and furniture manufacturing. A large South Korean company, a leader in the field of consumer electronics, will become a partner providing further improvement of the project technology, co-investor and consumer of a significant part of the project's products. In total, it is planned to produce 80 thousand tons of ABS plastics per year as part of the project.

With the participation of RUSNANO, mass production of tapes based on high-temperature superconductors (HTS) of the second generation will be organized. The technical and price characteristics of the second-generation HTS tape, intended for production, will allow replacing traditionally used copper wires in the final products. The implementation of this project makes it possible to create a cluster of projects for the development of a number of new devices based on second-generation HTS tapes for use in the electric power industry (smart grids), medicine (superconducting compact tomographs), transport (engines based on second-generation HTS tapes) and other industries. The main advantages of such devices are energy efficiency, significantly lower weight and size characteristics and reliability (including fire safety).

As part of the project announced by ESTO-Vacuum LLC, the production of automated vacuum installations for ion-plasma deposition and etching of micro- and nanostructures will be expanded. This equipment is used primarily for the manufacture of components of microelectronics, micromechanics, avionics, and can also be used in the creation of modifying coatings.

In addition, on the basis of CJSC Svetlana-Optoelectronics, which was the applicant of the project, it is planned to expand the serial production of white LEDs. The consumers of the products will be manufacturers of LED lighting equipment.

The Supervisory Board of RUSNANO also considered procedural issues of the formation of the Infrastructure Program Fund, the decision to establish which was made in accordance with Federal Law No. 211-FZ "On the Reorganization of the Russian Nanotechnology Corporation". The purpose of the foundation's activities is to develop innovative infrastructure in the field of nanotechnology, including the implementation of educational and infrastructure programs already started by RUSNANO.

The final parameters of RUSNANO's new projects will be known after the signing of investment agreements between their participants.
