How many years should they live?

Life has become longer
Every year the life expectancy of the average European
increases by 2-3 months.

New results of statistics on average life expectancy in the EU countries have become known. According to the results of 2009, it was 82.3 years among women and 76.3 years among men. Despite the gloomy forecasts of demographers in the late 90s, this indicator has grown by more than 2 years in ten years. Its growth was not stopped by the "epidemic" of obesity, nor the rapid spread of mental illness and decreased mobility. Experts associate the increase in life expectancy primarily with an increase in the general level of education. According to a study by the European Commission, in most Western European countries, highly educated women can expect to be 87 years old, and men – 83 years of life.

The average life expectancy reached record heights in France, where it was 85.1 years among the female population, which became the second indicator in the world after Japan. Spaniards (84.9) and Italians (84.5), as well as residents of Sweden and Finland (83.5 each) can expect about the same age. By the way, it is in the Northern European countries that the male population is catching up with women at the fastest pace in terms of life expectancy. In Europe, men live the longest in Sweden (79.4). They are followed by Italians (79.1), Spaniards and Dutch (78.7 each), as well as the French (78).

In Germany, life expectancy among women was 82.8 years, and among men 77.8 years. It should be noted that in the mid-90s, these indicators dropped to 79 and 72 years, respectively, and only by the beginning of the last decade returned to the level of the late 80s, continuing rapid growth. The improvement in this dynamic is mainly due to the improvement in the quality of life and the level of healthcare in the new federal lands.

The lowest life expectancy in the European Union remains in the countries of the former socialist camp and, first of all, in the south-eastern and Baltic republics. Romanian and Bulgarian women on average can count on the age of 77.4 years, and Latvians and Lithuanians – 78.1 and 78.7 years. Among the male population, Lithuanians have the most modest expectations, whose life expectancy is 67.5 years. A similar situation is observed in Latvia (68.1), Estonia and Romania (68.6 each).
