Investments in biotech and medical industry are breaking records

Biotechnology Funding Hits 4-Year High as Startups SufferAccording to the results of 2011, the volume of venture investments in biotech companies in the United States increased by 22% compared to 2010. Along with this, the number of companies that entered the stock market for the first time decreased.

According to the data published in the report of the National Venture Capital Association and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC, financing of companies producing medical devices and equipment used in medicine increased by 20%. At the same time, the number of such companies that entered the stock market for the first time has decreased to a minimum over the past 16 years.

Venture investments in the development of new approaches to treatment were mainly provided to companies with projects in the final stages, which carries less risks.

In 2011, venture capital companies invested US$ 4.73 billion in 446 biotech enterprises, which was the largest amount invested in this industry since 2007. The volume of investments in 339 companies producing medical devices and equipment used in medicine amounted to $2.81 billion. About 153 companies engaged in the production of medical devices and biologics were first listed on the stock exchange in 2011. This is the lowest figure since 1996.

In 2011, the US regulatory authorities approved 30 new drugs, which is 43% more than in 2010. This is the highest figure since 2004, when 36 medicines were approved. At the same time, 15 of them were approved as part of the accelerated procedure as drugs that allow for significant progress in treatment. In addition, 13 of the approved medicines have been developed with the involvement of venture financing.

According to a survey conducted in December 2011, about 42% of venture investors expect a reduction in the number of companies operating in the healthcare sector, whose shares will be listed on the stock exchange for the first time, 18% of them believe that this figure will increase; 58% predict a reduction in 2012 financing of biopharmaceutical companies from American investors; only 7% expect this indicator to grow.
