In recent years, several studies and prototypes have appeared demonstrating new possibilities of contact lenses that go beyond simple vision correction. One of these developments has been certified by the regulator. The US FDA has given the go-ahead for the use of the world's first contact lenses that supply the eyes with medicines.

New contact lenses were developed by Johnson & Johnson to treat itchy eyes caused by allergies. According to the authors of the invention, it is more convenient than using eye drops, according to a press release Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Receives FDA Approval for ACUVUE® Theravision™ with Ketotifen - World's First and Only Drug–Eluting Contact Lens. Acuvue Theravision with Ketotifen lenses are filled with 19 mg of the common antihistamine ketotifen. The duration of the drug is up to 12 hours. Like regular daytime contact lenses, they are disposable.

The effectiveness and safety of contact lenses has been demonstrated in recent clinical trials. The third phase was completed successfully, and the FDA approved this technology — the first in its category. It is expected that next year a similar decision will be made by the relevant Japanese authorities and Canada.

"Eye allergic itching in contact lens wearers may soon become a thing of the past thanks to the FDA's decision to certify Acuvue Therapy with Ketotifen," said Brian Pall, director of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care. "These new lenses can help many people, as they relieve allergic itching for 12 hours, without eye drops, and also provide vision correction".
