Anti-cancer helmet

Magnetic helmet reduced the brain tumor of an American by a third

A helmet generating a magnetic field helped reduce the mass of a malignant tumor by 31 percent in five months in a patient with recurrent glioblastoma. The results of clinical trials of this noninvasive treatment method were published in Frontiers in Oncology by American physicians (Baskin et al., Case Report: End-Stage Recurrent Glioblastoma Treated With a New Noninvasive Non-Contact Oncomagnetic Device). In the future, they are going to conduct new clinical trials, including more patients with malignant neoplasms.

Glioblastoma is one of the most dangerous malignant brain tumors. Even with chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the average survival is 15 months, and without treatment – 3 months. These methods of treatment are difficult for patients to tolerate, and surgery is not always possible due to the location of the tumor in vital areas of the brain.

A few years ago, the FDA approved an innovative treatment method – electric field therapy. It destroys tubulin dimers and mitotic spindles in tumor cells, preventing the growth of neoplasms. With recurrent glioblastoma, this method increases survival by half a month, and with newly diagnosed glioblastoma – by 31 percent. Even a small increase in life expectancy for patients is assessed by doctors as a good result.

A team of American doctors led by Santosh A. Helekar from the Houston Neurological Institute used an advanced device to treat a patient with recurrent glioblastoma, which generates not an electric, but a magnetic field. The device is a helmet with built-in rotating magnets connected to an electronic controller that is powered by a rechargeable battery. The magnetic field disrupts the transport of electrons in the respiratory chain of mitochondria, and causes the death of cancer cells. The patient wore a helmet for six hours every day at home. The treatment lasted five weeks, and then it had to be stopped, as the man fell and suffered a head injury, from which he subsequently died. Doctors have not found a link between the treatment and the cause of death. It is also worth noting that the man periodically fell before the start of treatment.

The last intermediate brain examination revealed that the volume of malignant formation in the patient decreased by 31 percent. Prior to this, clinical studies have not reported such a significant reduction in tumor size with noninvasive treatment. The researchers admit that it is too early to talk about the absolute success of using a magnetic helmet in the treatment of brain cancer, since only one patient participated in the trial, but doctors are optimistic and plan to attract more patients to the study in the future.

American and Italian scientists have developed a method of treating glioblastoma using genetically modified lymphocytes, which successfully suppressed the development of glioblastoma in mice and prolonged their lives.
