Hope for diabetics: ultrasound pill instead of injection

Ultrasound tablet will save diabetics from regular insulin injections

Copper newsAmericans have created an ultrasound pill that promotes accelerated absorption of the drug in the digestive tract, reports New Scientist (Ultrasound pill helps the medicine go down).

The uPill device was developed by ZetrOZ with the participation of specialists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Pharmacologically active substances will be applied externally to the electronic filling of the tablet enclosed in the capsule. After taking the pill during its passage through the gastrointestinal tract, the device begins to generate ultrasonic waves.

According to Daniel Anderson, an employee of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, under the influence of ultrasound, tissues warm up, the permeability of cell membranes increases, and as a result, the absorption rate of the drug can increase up to 10 times relative to the initial level.

The developers suggest using uPill in combination with drugs made on the basis of protein molecules. This group includes insulin preparations, many vaccines, as well as drugs for the treatment of oncological diseases. The creators of the pill expect that the use of the device will allow diabetics to refuse regular injections of insulin and take it inside.

One of the founders of ZetrOZ, George Lewis, in turn, noted that the company had previously created an ultrasound patch that ensures the percutaneous flow of drugs into the body. According to him, the key task in the development of uPill was to further reduce the size of the device in order to make it suitable for ingestion.

Currently, the developers are conducting clinical trials of an ultrasound tablet on animals. Henderson expressed hope that uPill will be released to the market within a few years. According to him, the market value of the device will be from 20 to 30 dollars.

In the original note it is written that theoretically such a device can be made reusable and, to save money, it can be recharged. Nude-nude... – VM.
