Immunity Memory

A new "micro-organ" was found in a person

Scientists from the Australian Garvan Institute of Medical Research have discovered a new "micro-organ" that provides the immune system's response to re-infection of the body with an infection already known to it.

The structure was called a "subcapsular proliferative focus" (subcapsular proliferative foci, SPF). Experts found it above the lymph node in mice using a two-photon laser microscope, which allowed to obtain a three-dimensional image of the tissue. Later, the same "micro-organ" was found in the human body.

In it, the researchers recorded an accumulation of memory B cells that help the immune system "remember" and neutralize infections. Biologists knew about the existence of these cells, but the location of their localization was discovered for the first time.

"When the body is fighting bacteria that can double every 20-30 minutes, every moment counts. Simply put, if the infection response takes too long to mature, you die. That is why vaccines are so important – they train the immune system so that when the disease recurs, antibodies are produced very quickly," said one of the authors of the study, Tri Fan.

According to him, the "proliferative center" is ideally located for a rapid immune response. When the bacterium enters the body again, everything necessary for the production of antibodies is already in place, the scientist added.
