Iodine-125 of domestic production

New technologies help doctors in the treatment of cancer

Dubna SEZ

In June of this year, the RUSNANO portfolio company Bebig (the subsidiary NanoBrahiTek has the status of a resident of the special economic zone) launched in Dubna the production of full-cycle micro sources for low-dose brachytherapy, the only one in Russia. And at the end of autumn, micro sources made by the company based on the isotope iodine-125 were implanted in the first patients in Krasnoyarsk.

Treatment of prostate cancer by brachytherapy (this is a modern high-tech type of radiotherapy that is as gentle as possible for the patient, in which isotopes for treatment are delivered directly to the tumor without affecting adjacent tissues and organs) was started on the basis of the Siberian Clinical Center of the FMBA of Russia in Krasnoyarsk. According to the press service of RUSNANO, unique prostate surgeries were performed at the Center for Nuclear Medicine of the FMBA under the leadership of Vasily Oshchepkov, researcher at the Research Institute of Urology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Candidate of Medical Sciences and member of the Board of the Association of Brachytherapists of Russia.

Patients with prostate cancer from the Siberian and Far Eastern Federal Districts will be able to undergo treatment at the Siberian Clinical Center of the FMBA of Russia, the report says. By the end of the year, the staff of the center plans to perform 20 operations, in 2015 100 more patients will undergo brachytherapy. For cancer patients, treatment is free of charge, since brachytherapy belongs to the category of high-tech medical care.

Kirill Mayorov, CEO of BEBIG, speaking at the opening of the brachytherapy center in Krasnoyarsk, noted, in particular, that prostate cancer is becoming a social problem: most often this ailment affects residents of developed industrial cities. Brachytherapy allows men not only to avoid disability, but also to maintain their usual lifestyle.

"By promoting this minimally invasive, but at the same time highly effective method of treatment, we want to provide an opportunity for all those in need to take advantage of the achievements of nuclear medicine," Kirill Mayorov said.

Recall that the chairman of the Management Board of RUSNANO Management Company Anatoly Chubais, in his comments to journalists at the opening ceremony of the production of micro sources for low–dose brachytherapy in Dubna, drew attention to the "narrow link" - there is an insufficient number of specialists in the regions who professionally own such a method of treatment as brachytherapy, and the appropriate offices for this procedure. "That's where we need to expand so that every patient in need of this treatment gets access to it," he stressed.

The next step towards this goal has been taken.
