Scientists are intrigued by the case of a cure for inoperable pancreatic cancer

The five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is about 10%, since this type of tumor is most often diagnosed at late stages. A cure for cancer at an inoperable stage is an amazing rarity that happened to a patient named Jan Hilgeman. Now scientists are conducting detailed molecular studies of her tumor tissue to find the reasons for the success of standard treatment that can help thousands of other patients around the world.

A rare clinical case of cure for pancreatic cancer is reported on the website of Columbia University. At the time of diagnosis in 2012, Yang was fifty years old. She visited a doctor complaining of an upset stomach, but soon she was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer. The forecasts were disappointing. First, the woman underwent chemotherapy, and then about two-thirds of her pancreas was removed, after which she was treated with chemotherapy again.

Three weeks after the operation, Jan returned to work, and five weeks later — to her usual life and for her pleasure she rode again. Meanwhile, in 2015, doctors discovered metastases in the lungs, and the patient underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy again.

In January of this year, ten years after the discovery of inoperable cancer, doctors did not find any signs of the disease in Yang.

This unique case of cure forced scientists to pay close attention to the patient. Currently, various molecular studies of tumor tissue are already being conducted in search of answers to numerous questions.

"They can reveal a new understanding of the development of pancreatic cancer at a late stage and the response to treatment," the scientists explain. Such studies are very important, because at the moment the five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is only about 10%.
