Russia has developed a system of "smart" wound healing

RIA News

Scientists of Dubna State University have created universal wound healing coatings based on biopolymers for the treatment of various types of wounds. The development gives a "smart" response and releases the right substance depending on the origin and condition of the wound. During testing, it showed greater efficiency in comparison with available analogues by 2.5-4 times. Another important advantage was the possibility of producing a new coating from Russian raw materials, the press service of the university reported.

For the production of wound-healing coatings, the specialists of the university have developed a technology for obtaining oligo- and polysaccharides of the pectin series, which have their own pronounced biological activity. In the course of in vivo studies (on a living organism — ed.), scientists have found that the effectiveness of the developed wound-healing coatings is twice as high as similar drugs.

The new coatings can be used in first aid, surgical interventions and treatment of wounds of various origins and conditions, said Professor, director of the REC "Phizkhimbiopharm" State University "Dubna" Raisa Gorshkova.

"Universal materials with prolonged action have been created and tested, which have a "smart" response. These materials contain multilayer micro- and nanocapsules and, depending on the origin, condition and phase of wound healing, release one or another active substance — antimicrobial, anti—inflammatory or regenerative," she said.

The researchers found that when the coating is applied to the wound, a strong film is formed that prevents the penetration of pathogenic microorganisms into the wound, but does not interfere with the access of oxygen.

The external use of the developed substances has a wound-healing effect at all phases of the wound process, contributing to the acceleration of wound healing of various etiologies more than twice as compared with analogues, the scientists note. In their opinion, this indicates both the anti-inflammatory effect of coatings and their effect on proliferative cellular activity.

The university reports that the new products do not require daily application and do not cause painful sensations in patients, while their shortcomings are eliminated due to the protective action of biopolymers developed by an industrial partner.

In addition to the "smart" response, the authors of the development call its advantages the absence of allergic reactions, an increase in efficiency compared to commercial drugs by 2.5-4 times and the use of domestic raw materials.

"The introduction of import—substituting technologies for the production of wound-healing coatings with a complex of encapsulated active substances released in response to changes in the condition of the wound will significantly speed up the recovery process of the wounded and injured," Gorshkova said.

The research was carried out jointly with LLC "MEZON".
