Coping with severe bleeding without medical help can be extremely difficult. In the USA, they are developing a special wound-sealing substance that will be at hand for everyone. She will save especially many lives on the battlefield.
Heavy bleeding after a serious injury can lead to death if medical care is not provided in time. So, the bleeding that could not be stopped is the main cause of death of wounded soldiers who could have been saved. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania (USA) propose to "seal" wounds with a special medical foam – a new material with unique properties. It stabilizes the patient's condition until the arrival of doctors. And everyone can use it.
The team has already received a three-year grant of $ 1.4 million from the US Army Medical Research Center for the development and testing of the final product, according to the university's website.
The foam will be sprayed directly on the wound. Such a "blockage" will stop the blood loss, and the person will be taken to the hospital from the scene of an accident or military operations to provide full medical care.
"After using the foam, natural enzymes in the body will slowly turn it into sugar, which will then be metabolized by the body," the developers emphasize the innovative approach.
Stopping bleeding is only part of the capabilities of the new substance. Over time, the foam slowly turns into an insoluble gel. It promotes wound healing without damaging their foamy structure. And if the foam needs to be removed from the surface of the skin, it will not damage the area of a deep wound.
Scientists are confident that foam will be the best replacement for all currently existing products. In the near future, the stages of testing the product are planned: they will check the stability of the "foam plug" to various weather conditions and evaluate the ease of use of the new material.
