American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first smart cap for insulin syringe pens from Bigfoot Biomedical, which helps with the dosage of insulin. The cap is synchronized with the glucose monitoring system, which allows you to monitor the indicators in real time.
Ensuring the correct dosage of insulin every day is not an easy task. Depending on the diet and the physical condition of the patient, this dose may constantly change. Therefore, new technologies that make life easier for diabetics are always in demand.
The Bigfoot Unity cap, developed by Bigfoot Biomedical, is compatible with most brands of syringe pens and allows patients to receive as much insulin as they need at the moment. Bigfoot Unity is synchronized with Abbott's FreeStyle Libre 2 continuous glucose monitoring system. The sensor is attached to the shoulder and registers the patient's glucose level. The indicators are transmitted to the smart cap, and it calculates the desired dose of insulin itself, which is then displayed on its screen. This principle of operation eliminates the need to independently calculate how much insulin you need to inject.
The new cap can be used by patients with type I and type II diabetes. The FDA has approved its use from the age of 12 and older. All data collected by the system is uploaded to the cloud storage. The indicators can then be tracked in the mobile application. On the Bigfoot Clinic Hub website, they can also be viewed by the patient's attending physician and make adjustments to the treatment regimen. Bigfoot Unity will be available in some American clinics starting this spring.
