Novartis tablets will monitor patientsCopper news
Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis will use tablets with an electronic chip in the production of its medicines, Yahoo News reports: Look out, your medicine is watching you (image from the website mobilewellbeing.info ).

These devices will allow attending physicians to monitor the intake of drugs by patients. According to the company's plans, the first drug in tablets with electronic chips will be produced to prevent transplant rejection after organ transplantation. In the future, Novartis intends to use this technology in the production of other medicines.

Tablets equipped with microchips were developed by the California private company Proteus Biomedical. In January 2010, the Swiss pharmaceutical giant paid developers $ 24 million for the right to use this technology in its own production.

The electronic chip is activated upon contact with gastric juice. It transmits information about taking medication wirelessly to a miniature device attached to the patient's skin, which in turn sends data to a mobile phone or to the attending physician via the Internet.

According to Novartis CEO of Development Trevor Mundel, the first tablets with chips will control the frequency of administration and the necessary dosage of the drug for patients who have undergone transplantation. In the long term, the microchip will evaluate the heart rate, body temperature, as well as the effectiveness of the therapy.

Mandel noted that tablets with an electronic chip will be submitted for consideration by European supervisory authorities within 18 months. When registering a new form of drug release, the company's management hopes to conduct bioequivalent tests instead of full-fledged clinical trials, since the active substance of the drug remains the same. The representative of Novartis noted that the issue of confidentiality of data collected by the chip about the patient's condition is of greater interest to the supervisory authorities.
