The first operation on microvessels with the help of a robot was performed
Surgeons from the Maastricht University Medical Center used a robot for the first time in the world for a super-microsurgical operation on a patient's lymphedema.
Super microsurgery is a type of surgery to connect adjacent tissues or fibers that are performed on microvessels (0.8–0.5 millimeters in diameter or less). Most often, such operations are used to treat lymphedema, a chronic condition in which lymphatic fluid accumulates in the tissues of the body and causes swelling. This often happens as a side effect of breast cancer treatment.
During a super-microsurgical operation, the lymphatic vessels connect with the blood vessels, which helps restore the flow of lymphatic fluid, so that the swelling subsides. This is a very delicate operation, and few surgeons are able to perform it manually.
Surgeons from Maastricht used a robot manufactured by Microsure to suture microscopic vessels on the patient's arm. The device is controlled by the surgeon, the robot turns the movements of his hands into smaller and more precise manipulations that the robotic "hands" perform on the patient's tissues. The device also stabilizes the tremor that may occur in the surgeon's hands, which makes the procedure more controlled and easier to perform, the press service of the University of Maastricht said.
Now, according to doctors, the patient feels well, and the surgeons themselves are full of enthusiasm to use the robot to perform similar operations in the future.

Robots are already being used for other types of operations. For example, surgeons from the John Radcliffe Hospital in the UK used a robot to cut the thinnest membrane from the eye, and the STAR robot created in the USA is able to apply surgical stitches.
This operation was announced at the 26th World Congress of Lymphology in Barcelona.
