The hormone kisspeptin, discovered in the mid-1990s, is considered an important regulator of human reproductive behavior. For example, in 2017, it turned out that this compound mainly works in areas of the brain associated with sexual arousal and romantic feelings.

In the course of a new study, which is described in the press release of The hormone kisspeptin can enhance brain activity associated with attraction, according to a new study, experts from Imperial College London clarified the role of the hormone in the human nervous system. They recruited a group of 33 young healthy men, half of whom were injected intravenously with kisspeptin, and the rest with placebo. Then the volunteers were subjected to olfactory tests using popular women's perfumes, and also asked them to rate photos of girls in terms of attractiveness. At the same time, their brain activity was recorded using MRI.

The results showed that the injection of kisspeptin enhances the reaction of some parts of the limbic system to the fragrance of women's perfume. These brain regions are involved in the emotional evaluation of odors and the stimulation of sexual arousal. In experiments with photographs, kisspeptin caused a different effect. Its introduction activated the areas of the prefrontal cortex of the brain that are involved in assessing the beauty of the face.

Interestingly, the lower the level of sexual desire in the subjects, the stronger was the effect of kisspeptin. This gives hope that the "kissing hormone" can be used to treat men with psychosexual disorders, for example, low libido.

Now the researchers plan to test the effect of kisspeptin on more men and find out how long the effect of one injection lasts. In addition, they will have to figure out what role this kissing hormone plays in female sexuality.

Article by Yang et al. Kisspeptin enhances brain responses to olfactory and visual cues of attraction in men published in the journal JCI Insight – VM.

Last year, the FDA issued a permit for the sale of the hormone bremelanotide, which increases sexual desire in women. In fact, this is "female Viagra". Experts' opinions on this compound are divided: many of them believe that the hormone is insufficiently studied.
