Without wires and battery

American scientists have developed an ultra-thin "computer-on-the-bone"

Tatiana Matveeva, "Scientific Russia" A team of engineers and doctors from the University of Arizona (USA) has developed an ultra-thin wireless device that is attached to the surface of the bone and in the future will be able to help doctors monitor the condition of patients' bones for a long time, the press service of the university reports.

The device is described in an article published in Nature Communications (Cai et al., Osseosurface electronics—thin, wireless, batteryfree and multimodal musculoskeletal biointerfaces).

Since the muscles are located very close to the bones and often move, it is important that such a device is thin enough, does not irritate the surrounding tissues and does not shift. Therefore, the new "computer-on-the-bone" is not thicker than a sheet of paper and can repeat the uneven surface of the bone. The device does not need a battery. It uses a method of energy transfer and communication – short–range contactless communication - which is also used in smartphones for contactless payment.

How does the device attach to the bone? Bones lose their outer layers of tissue and are renewed, as are the outer layers of the skin. Thus, if you use traditional medical glue to attach something to the bone, it will disappear after a few months. To solve this problem, bioengineers have developed an adhesive that contains calcium particles with an atomic structure similar to bone cells. So the bone "believes" that the electronic device is part of it.

The doctor can attach a new "mini-computer" to the broken bone to control the healing process. It can also benefit patients who suffer from, for example, osteoporosis. The device will help you understand how quickly and how well the bone heals, and can also influence clinical treatment decisions. The collected data will tell you when to remove temporary hardware, such as plates, rods or screws, and what dosage of medicine for bone healing should be prescribed.
