Diet for the brain

One glass of wine a day and a special diet will help the brain not to age

This diet includes elements of the Mediterranean and the so–called DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) - a diet that is designed specifically for people with high blood pressure.

The MIND diet consists of the following recommendations: once a day, you need to eat three servings of whole grains and as many different vegetables, herbs and nuts as possible; three days a week, a variety of legumes should be present in the diet; twice a week – berries and poultry; at least once a week – fish.

At the same time, you need to drink a glass of red wine once a day.

The authors draw attention to the fact that they excluded fruits from the diet, and left only berries. "It is believed that blueberries have a powerful potential in supporting the work of the brain. Also, previous studies show that strawberries have similar properties," says the lead author of the study, Martha Clare Morris (Martha Clare Morris).

To support the work of the brain and slow down its aging, it is necessary to exclude from the diet or significantly reduce the consumption of beef and pork, butter and margarine, cheeses, sweets, fried food and fast food.

To test the effectiveness of the MIND diet, the authors conducted a study that involved 960 elderly people (Chicago residents) aged about 80 years who did not have senile dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Doctors have been monitoring their health for 4.7 years.

During this time, they tested the participants annually in order to assess their mental abilities and memory performance. Also, the participants tried to stick to the MIND diet, and they reported on how well they managed it in special questionnaires.

As the authors had hoped, the results of the study showed that the MIND diet significantly slowed down the aging process of the brain and improved cognitive functions in older people. Moreover, in those participants of the experiment who strictly adhered to all the recommendations of nutritionists and strictly followed this diet, brain aging slowed down by 7.5 years (compared to people with a normal diet).

"Unfortunately, all people's mental abilities deteriorate with age. Currently, many elderly people suffer from senile dementia, Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, it is very important to solve this problem. And this will help, including a special diet," says Maurice (in the article The MIND diet may slow brain aging by 7.5 years, KurzweilAI – VM).

An article by American nutritionists describing the MIND diet and the results of evaluating its effectiveness is published in the latest issue of Alzheimer's & Dementia magazine: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association (Morris et al., MIND diet slows cognitive decline with aging).
