Medicines for prolonging life: who is looking for, he will always find

When will the old age pill appear?

Irina Mustafina, Slon.ruAlexey Ryazanov, Professor of pharmacology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, spoke at the Open Innovations forum about how an experiment is underway to find drugs to prolong life:

"In 2009, together with Rostock Group and Russian entrepreneur Alexander Chikunov, we started screening chemicals [affecting] longevity at the Jackson Laboratory in the USA. The main topic of our research is signaling molecules, protein synthesis and their relationship with cell growth, differentiation and aging. Within the framework of the project, about 100 thousand medicines, that is, almost the entire spectrum of biologically active substances, are tested for the ability to increase the life of mammals by more than 30%.

15 thousand laboratory mice participate in our experiment. Mice are much more effective than fruit flies or nematode worms, the results of which cannot be applied to humans. The experiment is not over yet, and I cannot summarize, but some interesting results have already been obtained. In the course of the study, more than half of our mice died. But the mice that used about 10 specific drugs all survived. It is possible that these drugs have a life-span effect – they prolong life.

It is clear that we cannot yet provide a person with eternal youth. But pay attention to the fact that most diseases occur in old age, and if we have a drug to prolong life, then these diseases can be "postponed" for several decades, and people will be able to live up to 100 years or more.

When the screening is over, we plan to expand the boundaries of the experiment. Based on our new database, we want to produce medicines aimed at both increasing life expectancy and improving health."
