Chuchalin: anti-smoking law will increase
life expectancy of the population

RIA NewsThe adoption of the anti-smoking law in Russia will contribute to an increase in the life expectancy of the population, which will help solve the demographic problem, says Alexander Chuchalin, director of the Research Institute of Pulmonology, chief therapist of Russia.

"If we have an effective fight against tobacco smoking, then plus 10-15 years to the life (of the population), we will solve the problem of demographic disorder. If it works (the anti–smoking law), then we will come to this result," Chuchalin said at a press conference in Moscow on Tuesday.

He also recalled that lung diseases occupy one of the leading positions in the structure of morbidity in Russia.

According to him, statistics are formed on the basis of access to doctors, so they do not reflect the full picture.

According to official data, about 1 million people suffer from bronchial asthma in Russia, but in fact this figure reaches 5-6 million, Chuchalin noted. As for chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, according to official statistics, they also suffer from a little more than 1 million people, but in reality there are about 10 million such patients, the doctor said.

Andrey Belevsky, Chief Specialist pulmonologist of the Moscow Department of Health, added that the number of registered patients with asthma is about 1% of the city's population, while the number of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases is 1.2%. "This is about 0.3-0.5% more than in Russia as a whole. This is due to the fact that there are many specialists in Moscow and high detection," he said.

The Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation has prepared a bill "On the protection of public health from the consequences of tobacco consumption." The document submitted by the department to the government on May 20 and returned for revision provides for a ban on smoking in public places, on the sale of cigarettes in stalls, on the demonstration of tobacco products and the smoking process in new audiovisual works intended for children. The Agency plans to prepare amendments to this draft law and submit it to the Government for consideration by November 1, 2012.
