Dutch reproductive doctor Jan Karbaat, who died in 2017 at the age of 89, secretly impregnated more than 50 women, and his numerous children, who now live in different parts of the world, can claim compensation, the RTL Nieuws portal reports.

Jan Karbaat became famous after in 2017, before his death, he admitted that he could conceive about 60 children while working at a clinic in the Dutch city of Barendrecht, as he replaced the sperm of the fathers of the children with his own. After that, Karbaat's potential children filed a civil lawsuit to find out who their father really is. In February 2019, the court allowed the doctor's DNA to be used for a paternity test.

According to media reports, a DNA test confirmed that Karbaat is the father of at least 49 children. At the same time, it is noted that the actual number of children may be much higher, and the doctor's children may live not only in the Netherlands, but also abroad, including in the USA.

The doctor's children reacted differently to the test results. So, 39-year-old Martijn van Halen said that what Karbaat did "is terrible for both parents and brothers and sisters."

"They were deceived, and the doctor did it, it's wrong. But if we talk about me, I wouldn't be here without this doctor," van Halen said.

Before receiving the results, van Halen checked his DNA with others in the American database and found out that he had a large family. "In a few weeks, I found out that I have 25 siblings, half–siblings," van Halen said. According to him, most of the doctor's children are already adults and have children themselves, while he noted that all brothers and sisters are very similar to each other.

"We are all glad to have clarity and information, now we can move on," said another son of Karbaat, 32–year-old Joey Hufdman.

At the same time, he stressed that he intends to demand compensation, since the doctor deceived his mother by replacing the sperm of the man who raised him as a father with his own.

The NL Times reports that Karbaat worked at the IVF clinic from 1980 until its closure in 2009 after inspectors found irregularities in the hospital's records system. It is noted that during the work of the clinic, infertility specialists did not control each other properly.
