A Swedish court has sentenced a world-famous transplant surgeon to probation

The court of the municipality of Solna (Stockholm, Sweden) sentenced the infamous Italian doctor Paolo Macchiarini to probation for causing bodily harm.

Macchiarini is known as the creator of bioengineered trachea transplantation technology. At the same time, his reputation, to put it mildly, is flawed: colleagues have repeatedly accused Paolo of falsifying the results of his operations, exaggerating their success, violating medical norms, abusing his position. In 2019, Macchiarini was tried in Italy for extortion. But the most important thing is that too many patients have died after operations performed by the Italian — up to 20 people worldwide, including four patients operated on by him in Krasnodar, Russia.

During the trial, which took place in May of this year in Sweden, Macchiarini was accused of causing bodily harm to three Swedish patients, whom the surgeon operated on in a clinic based on the Karolinska Institute. According to the prosecutor's office, the 63-year-old doctor carried out the operations not based on scientific data and accumulated experience, so they could even be qualified as an attack. Moreover, all three of the operated died. However, in two cases out of three, the court acquitted the Italian transplant specialist: according to the court, the condition of these patients was so severe that an attempt to help them — even using not entirely reliable methods — was justified. However, having the negative experience of the first two operations at his disposal, the court considered that the surgeon should have refrained from the third. For the fact that Macchiarini did not do this and still carried out the operation, he was sentenced to probation.

A suspended sentence in Sweden means that if Paolo Macchiarini commits another crime within two years, his sentence will be reviewed in favor of a harsher punishment.
