The doctor who secretly impregnated dozens of patients was forced to pay
In the Canadian city of Ottawa, the reproductive physician Bernard Norman Barwin has been fertilizing infertile patients with sperm from the wrong donors for decades. According to the local news portal CBC News, the medic was fined.
On June 25, the Ontario College, which controls the standards of medical practice and issues licenses, fined Norman Barwin ten thousand Canadian dollars (477 thousand rubles). He was also banned from working in the field of medicine and his license was taken away. The 80-year-old doctor did not appear before the disciplinary committee in person, but did not challenge the charges through a lawyer.
In 2013, a Canadian was already suspended from work for artificially inseminating three clients with the wrong sperm. Then Norman Barwin explained that there was a mix-up at the hospital.
During the entire time of his medical practice, approximately 50-100 children were born from the sperm of the wrong donors. In 11 cases, the reproductologist used his own biological material without the knowledge of the patients.
Norman Barwin's secret activities were revealed when one of the children born from in vitro fertilization (IVF) decided to study his family tree. Around the same time, another child was diagnosed with celiac disease – gluten intolerance, which is transmitted genetically. However, his parents did not have this disease.
Rebecca Dixon found out that her biological father was Norman Barwin three years ago. The girl admitted that she felt "defiled." "At that moment, my life changed forever," she added. – For a while I felt like a stranger in my own body. It was like a part of me didn't belong to me anymore."
29-year-old Dixon is looking for her blood brothers and sisters. At the moment, she has found 15 relatives, but expects that there will be even more.
In April, it was reported that the Dutch doctor Jan Karbaat was the father of at least 49 children conceived in his clinic using in vitro fertilization. He used his own biological material without the knowledge of the patients, and in some cases deliberately acted against their will.
