Experts will check the likely side effects of the HPV vaccine

The European Medicines Agency has begun studying a vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV) to "further refine the characteristics and safety profile." At the same time, the organization's employees stressed that the study does not question the fact that the benefits of using the vaccine exceed the possible risks.

During the study of the drug, experts will not make any changes to the recommendations for the use of the vaccine. Currently, many countries are conducting an HPV immunization program. According to statistics, more than 72 million people received the vaccine. Vaccination is believed to protect against cervical cancer caused by infection with the virus. At the same time, in 2013, the Ministry of Health of Japan canceled its official recommendation regarding HPV vaccination.

The study was initiated by experts from Denmark, who noted that, probably, in some cases, HPV vaccination is accompanied by the development of reflex sympathetic dystrophy – a pain syndrome that usually occurs after tissue damage, for example, after a myocardial infarction. The second side effect, the researchers called the development of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, which is characterized by an increase in heart rate when moving to a sitting or standing position.

Earlier, an article appeared in the Danish Medical Journal, the authors of which reported on the likely side effects caused by immunization with the quadrivalent Gardasil vaccine against HPV. "Our data neither confirm nor refute the existence of a link between vaccination and the development of these diseases, but they prove the need for a repeat study," the scientists explained. A similar opinion was expressed by researchers from the USA. In addition, an article about the likely side effects of the vaccine appeared in the European Journal of Neurology in 2014.

Despite the fact that the Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee has not confirmed the link between HPV immunization and the development of diseases, the European Agency will re-examine this issue.
