The Breakthrough Prize Foundation announced the names of the winners of the eponymous prize for 2022 in fundamental physics, in the fields of life sciences and mathematics, as well as the winners of the New Horizons and New Frontiers prizes for young scientists. The total prize fund of the "scientific Oscar" amounted to $ 15.75 million, according to the statement of the foundation.

Each of the five awards is $3 million. The winners of the award in the field of life sciences were Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman, developers of the mRNA modification technology that formed the basis of many coronavirus vaccines, including Pfizer and Moderna. Also, the awards in this nomination were awarded to the developers of DNA and RNA sequencing methods of the new generation and Jeffrey Kelly, a man who showed the role of the protein transtiretin in the development of many neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases.

The prize in fundamental physics was awarded to Hidetoshi Katori and Jun Ye, who independently managed to increase the accuracy of atomic clocks three times. Such devices, according to the organizers of the award, lag behind by a second once every 15 billion years.

In the field of mathematics, the winner of the prize "for monumental work that led to a breakthrough in our understanding" of holonomic D-modules was the Japanese Takuro Moshizuki, who studied their variations with singularities – points where the equations in question no longer make sense.

Ten young physicists and mathematicians, including researchers of time crystals and gravitational waves, will share six New Horizons prizes of $100,000 each. Three researchers became laureates of the Mariam Mirzakhani New Frontiers Prize for women mathematicians.

The Breakthrough Prize was established by the founder Mail.Ru Yuri Milner, Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg, their wives – Priscilla Chan and Julia Milner – as well as Google co-founder Sergey Brin and his then-wife Anna Wojcicki.
