Interest in science in Russia is falling

Interest in science: the most curious fields of knowledge, the most famous scientists

The All–Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM) presents data on whether Russians are interested in science, which discoveries are most interesting to them, and which scientists are most famous.

Over the past six years, interest in scientific and technical discoveries among Russians has significantly decreased (from 68% in 2007 to 47% in 2013). At the same time, the number of those who do not care about new achievements in science and technology has increased (28% - six years ago against 49% this year). Scientific and technical achievements are most often included in the sphere of interests of men (54%), active Internet users (57%), wealthy and highly educated (53% each) Russians. Women (54%), poorly educated (67%), low-income (54%) and those who do not use the Internet (57%) turned out to be indifferent to science.

Among the fields of science that arouse the greatest interest among Russians are medicine (25%), technical achievements (19%), astronomy and space exploration (16%). In the second echelon of scientific interests are nanotechnology and automotive (7% each), physics and biology (6% each), Internet technology and electronics (5% each), history (4%), chemistry and military developments (3% each). The least attention of respondents is paid to the sciences of agriculture, architecture, construction and transport (1% each).

Zhores Alferov and Sergey Kapitsa are the most famous Russian scientists of our time (5-8% in 2007-2013 and 3-6%– respectively). The third place was shared by Andrei Sakharov and Grigory Perelman (2% each). Korolev, Roshal, Fedorov and Wasserman, who was included in the list for the first time, were also named among popular scientists – 1% each.

The initiative All-Russian VTSIOM survey was conducted on February 2-3, 2013. 1,600 people were interviewed in 138 localities in 46 regions, territories and republics of Russia. The statistical error does not exceed 3.4%.
