Are Russians ready to spend on fitness and paid medicine?

The All–Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM) presents data on how Russians take care of their health – whether they seek medical help in a timely manner, whether they exercise and monitor nutrition, and whether respondents are willing to spend money on maintaining well-being - for example, to contact commercial medical centers, attend fitness clubs.

Most Russians still try to take care of their health without unnecessary expenses, preferring a state polyclinic to a commercial medical center, sports classes at home – going to a fitness club.

More than half of Russians, if they have health problems, turn to medical specialists (58%), and more than a third self-medicate (36%).

At the same time, applying to a state clinic for medical services is still a more common practice (51%) than to a commercial medical center (7%).

The majority of Russians try to keep themselves in good shape: 52% of respondents do sports with one frequency or another. They try to do physical education at no extra cost: most of them prefer sports classes at home (47%) to trips to fitness centers (12%) or sports clubs (9%). Nevertheless, it should be noted that the volume of consumption of fitness services has increased somewhat over the past year: in 2012, only 9% of those who do sports reported that they were clients of fitness clubs.

Proper nutrition, another important component of a healthy lifestyle, is an urgent issue for most Russians: 43% generally monitor their diet, trying to eat healthy food, 14% adhere to a diet recommended by a doctor (6%) or chosen independently (8%). At the same time, over the past year, Russians have become more attentive to their diet: in 2012, there were only 35% of those who try to eat healthy food.

Muscovites and Petersburgers are more willing to spend on their health than other Russians. Almost every tenth resident of both capitals reports that he is a patient of a commercial medical center (9%), and almost a third of them (29%) use the services of fitness clubs. Half of the residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg (50%) try to eat healthy food - for comparison, only 34% of such respondents turned out to be in the villages.

The initiative All-Russian VTSIOM survey was conducted on May 12-13, 2013. 1,600 people were interviewed in 130 localities in 42 regions, territories and republics of Russia. The statistical error does not exceed 3.4%.
