Patch-heart monitor

The recording ECG patch was successfully tested on Americans with arrhythmia

Copper newsAmericans have successfully tested a disposable device for diagnosing arrhythmia, which resembles a patch, EurekAlert reports!

(Scripps doctors study novel new device to diagnose irregular heartbeat). Steven Higgins, head of the Department of Electrophysiology at Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego, California, told about the test results of the Zio Patch device released by iRhythm Technologies.

Zio Patch is a heart monitor that evaluates the electrical activity of the heart muscle, tracking the rhythm of the organ. At the same time, the device, which looks like a patch measuring 5 by 13 centimeters, slightly more than 10 millimeters thick and weighing 34 grams, is intended for single use.

Thanks to the lithium polymer battery, the device can continuously record an electrocardiogram (ECG) for 14 days, which significantly exceeds the duration of daily (Holter) ECG monitoring, which is widely used for the diagnosis of arrhythmias. In addition, it is protected from moisture and is entirely made of recyclable materials.

The tests of the device involved 285 patients who were taken to the intensive care unit with symptoms of various cardiac arrhythmias. Each of them had a Zio Patch pasted on his chest just before discharge. The doctors suggested that the volunteers wear the device until it comes off, and then send it by mail to decrypt the data.

Some kind of cardiac arrhythmias were detected in 40 percent of the study participants. One of these patients was fitted with an implantable defibrillator based on the results of an ECG assessment recorded by Zio Patch.
