Residences for the elderly

You won't want to die
In private nursing homes, patients are allowed to be bossy and capriciousIgor Yelkov, Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Millions of old people (according to forecasts, there will be 35 million pensioners in Russia in 2015) are unable to take care of themselves.

If relatives and friends for various reasons cannot or do not want to change diapers and give them injections, then there is only one way – to a nursing home. However, in the public consciousness, handing over parents there is about the same as sending your children to an orphanage.

Meanwhile, nursing homes are operating in the country, fundamentally destroying stereotypes about the terrible Russian "almshouses".

It's a little early for us to dieThere are 1.5 thousand nursing homes in the country, 99% of which are state-owned.

250 thousand old people and 17 thousand more live there . they are standing in line. In state conditions are often not so good: there are not enough medical staff, up to 20 patients per nurse in the most disadvantaged institutions. The guest is obliged to give 2/3 of the pension to the institution, which, of course, does not cover real expenses. The maintenance of a patient in such a house costs the budget 20-30 thousand rubles. The difference is made up by the regional budget, and the financial well-being of the regions is very different. Moscow can sometimes even afford the luxury of sending several dozen waiting lists to expensive private institutions, and many subjects do not even provide the elderly with the social benefits required by law.

A hundred prosperous commercial nursing homes are a drop in the bucket. There are countries where there are up to half of them. But until recently there were no private institutions in our country at all – so some progress is evident.

Geographically, private houses are distributed as follows: there are units in the regions, 20 – near St. Petersburg, the rest – in Moscow and the Moscow region. Private owners use "residence for the elderly" instead of the gloomy term "nursing home".

As a rule, such a residence is a small mansion at a distance of 10-35 km from the city. In Moscow, it is unprofitable to take the elderly away further: it will be inconvenient for relatives to visit them. And children, as a rule, pay for pensioners.

All companies focus on the advantages of suburban accommodation. For example, "Moscow Evenings" proudly emphasize that their clients live in a spacious 3-storey cottage, nature, near a forest, a lake.

Their colleagues from Care and Care place the elderly in three nursing homes to choose from: on a forest plot 15 km along the Kaluga highway, near Solnechnogorsk on the lake shore and in a forest area on the 35th km of the Rublevo-Uspensky highway.

All inclusiveThe price of accommodation is on average from 40 to 120 thousand rubles per month.

Most of the establishments, soberly assessing the solvency of the client, tries to keep their expenses within 40 thousand. You can pay for daily accommodation, some children "rent" their parents not with ends, but only for the duration of their vacations and business trips. Depending on the degree of autonomy of the old man, there are different programs. For example, the company "Good House" in Pushkino near Moscow offers three options: "Your home" for independent wards; "Help" – an average degree of dementia (senile dementia) and the need for round-the-clock nursing care and assistance when visiting the toilet. And finally, "Care" is a program for those who need help even when eating and changing diapers.

Dementia and diapers are terrible, of course, but that's the reality. The life expectancy of Russians is slowly growing. And many of those who are reading these lines now will live to an age when, according to gerontologists, a person will still be able to live, but will no longer remember why. As sad as it sounds.

The program "Your home" will cost from 1500 to 2100 rubles per day – the price depends on the room (you live together or alone) and on the period (over 30 days – cheaper). "Help" – from 1600 to 2200, and "Care" – from 1550 to 1900 rubles. You can even take your favorite cat or pug with you to the boarding house: 200 rubles per nose per day for accommodation, care and feeding. Pets are allowed only in single rooms.

What does the client get for such money? Meals: 5-6 times a day. Medical procedures: intramuscular and intravenous injections, droppers, monitoring of medication intake. Those in need are washed and helped to take a shower. Rooms are cleaned and linen is changed daily. Patients, of course, are entertained in every possible way, animators work in the boarding house, hiking, quizzes, evenings of memories are organized for cheerful wards. Communication with loved ones via Skype at any convenient time.

Among the services in most boarding houses are full hygienic care, nail and hair cutting.

Well, the most important thing is that the staff is well-trained to endure all the senile antics. Of which there are many.

An interesting review of a patient at such a house: the veteran artlessly reports that he has been a boss all his life and still loves to command. And what's nice, no one contradicts him here, command yourself to your health... Apparently, such a number did not pass at home.

Here are useful tips from the doctors of the "Good Home": "The modern concept of healthy aging is overcoming the dependence of an elderly person on diseases and ailments, overcoming feelings of uselessness and guilt, getting rid of depression and loneliness. It is important to increase the self-esteem of an elderly person."

And more: "With age, the zone of personal space increases, this is exactly what we call "became quarrelsome." It is absolutely necessary for old people to have their own personal "nest", a guarantee of respect for their personal borders. Elderly people willingly communicate during breakfast, lunch and dinner, during classes, but at the same time they get tired of communication quite quickly. To preserve their mental balance, they need to retire, take a break from outsiders."

It is important to remember this for those children who have decided to take care of the elderly at home.

The market dictatesAll private residences of the elderly live in harsh market conditions.

The state is still only looking for ways to interact with the non-state segment of the market. But it also has its advantages. The first sprouts of competition are already beginning to break through.

Example: a network of nursing homes is holding a special New Year's campaign – prices are reduced to 35 thousand rubles per month. Another institution in the village 15 km from the Moscow Ring Road along the Kiev highway tempts with Christmas discounts: the day fell from 1.8 thousand to 1.2 thousand rubles.

Each house studies competitors' offers and focuses on some of its own zest. In the boarding house "Tree of Life" special attention is paid to security: the territory is under round-the-clock video surveillance, to get to the territory, you have to pass two security posts.

The house in Pushkino is tempting: unlike the others, we have all the living rooms, public areas and the room of the medical staff on duty are located on the same floor, there is Internet in every room, a good library.

In the "Moscow evenings" they promise: if you don't like it here within 3 days from the moment of arrival, we will refund the money for accommodation in full.

Boarding house "Taking care of relatives": we have one nurse for four wards (who works around the clock); we accept bedridden people.

In general, there are already a lot of proposals. It's a small matter – for the well-off old people.

And how about themYou can live in Sun City (USA) only if you are over 55 years old.

The population is 39 thousand people, the average age of residents is 72.4 years. Infrastructure – 7 recreation centers, 11 golf courses, swimming pools, aerobics, dance studios, tennis courts, 120 clubs, 2 fishing lakes.

The apartment has an area of 60 sq. m. meters in this city of the elderly cost $31 thousand. Utility bills – $130/month (insurance, water, sewerage, garbage collection, support of the adjacent territory). All leisure services in the city are included in payments for the use of infrastructure – $432 per year.

In Belarus, in the village of Voigany (on the outskirts of the Minsk region), the country's only private nursing home "Family Pier" has opened. There are 45 elderly and disabled people. Meals – 5 times a day, clothes and medicines are free. Clients unsubscribe an apartment to a boarding school under an annuity agreement and give 90% of their pension every month.

Beijing: the number of elderly residents of the capital is 2.63 million people – 20% of the total population. There are 400 nursing homes in Beijing with 76 thousand beds. Of these, 29 thousand places belong to state institutions and 47 thousand to private nursing homes. The Government reduces the costs of services provided by private organizations by providing subsidies and benefits to pay for utilities.

Great Britain: the occupancy rate of nursing homes is 90%, the average stay is 14 months, the average cost of living is 28.5 thousand pounds per year. According to forecasts, by 2023, the demand for nursing homes will grow by 50%.
