- The killer in the white coat
An American oncogematologist, who prescribed chemotherapy to patients without medical necessity, received a 45-year prison sentence.
50-year-old Farid Fata pleaded guilty in September to prescribing cancer treatment to patients who were not ill (he spoke to some of them about the terminal stage of multiple myeloma). He confessed to 13 episodes of insurance fraud, one count of kickbacks and two counts of money laundering.

Prosecutors called him "the most notorious fraudster in the history of this country," for whom patients were "not people, but profit centers."
Fata received about $17.6 million through the state insurance program Medicare and private insurance companies. More than 550 patients received unnecessary (from a medical point of view) infusions or injections.
At the trial, Fata made a very emotional speech with apologies. "I violated the Hippocratic oath and undermined the trust of my patients. I do not know how to heal this wound. I don't know how to express my regret and shame," Fata said.
Fata is expected to serve at least 34 years in prison.
