The Nobel Prize Ceremony

"Scientific Russia"

On December 10, the day of memory of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish and Norwegian capitals annually host the ceremony of awarding the most prestigious prize in the scientific world, bearing his name. The award is presented to public figures and organizations who have made a significant contribution to strengthening international peace and security in Oslo, the rest – in Stockholm.

Recall that in 2013, the Nobel laureates were:

  • in the field of physiology and medicine – James Rothman, Randy Sheckman and Thomas Sudhof (USA) for discoveries concerning the mechanisms of regulation of intercellular interactions;
  • in the field of physics – Peter Higgs (Great Britain) and Francois Engler (Belgium) for the theoretical prediction of a mechanism that expands our understanding of the origin of the mass of subatomic particles, which was recently confirmed by the discovery of the predicted particle during the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider;
  • in the field of chemistry – Martin Karplus (Austria/USA), Michael Levit (UK/USA) and Arie Warschel (Israel/USA) for the development of methods for computer simulation of chemical reactions;
  • in the field of literature – Alice Munro (Canada), according to the wording of the committee – "a master of modern storytelling", whose works in this genre are considered by many experts to be a continuation of the traditions laid down by one of the most revered writers of Russia abroad – Anton Chekhov.

The Peace Prize was awarded to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) with the wording "for its large-scale efforts to get rid of chemical weapons," in particular, during the ongoing military conflict in Syria.

The Prize of the State Bank of Sweden in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel (which is not a Nobel Prize in the strict sense of the word) was awarded to three American economists – Eugene Fama, Lars Peter Hansen and Robert Shiller for empirical analysis of asset prices. Fluctuations in the value of stocks and bonds are almost impossible to predict in the short term (a few days or weeks), but they lend themselves well to forecasting for several years – this is how you can briefly formulate the main conclusion that these three analysts came to as a result of their many years of work.

In the summer of 2012, the Nobel Foundation announced that for the first time in the last 60 years, the size of the prize "will be reduced due to unfavorable times." If in 2011 the monetary equivalent of each of the awards was 10 million Swedish kronor, now it is equal to eight million (about 1.2 million US dollars).

Since 1901, the Nobel Prize has been awarded a total of 561 times, 847 people and 22 organizations have received it. The oldest winner of this year's "prize awards" will be 84-year–old Peter Higgs, the youngest is 57-year-old American physician Thomas Sudhof.

In addition to King Carl XVI Gustaf himself, who will present the awards, the winners will be accompanied by Queen Silvia, the husband of the Crown Princess Prince Daniel, the son of the monarchs Prince Carl Philip and the king's sister Princess Christina.

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeld, who went to South Africa for the official ceremony in memory of Nelson Mandela, will be absent from the Nobel Prizes and subsequent celebrations. Earlier it became known that the youngest daughter of the royal couple, Princess Madeleine, will not honor the events with her presence on December 10, because she is expecting a child in February and it will be difficult for her to cope with the long program of today.
