Light cigarettes cause particularly aggressive lung cancer, scientists say

RIA News

Today's popular light cigarettes turned out to be especially dangerous, as they cause one of the most aggressive forms of lung cancer – adenocarcinoma, according to an article published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (Song et al., Cigarette Filter Ventilation and its Relationship to Increasing Rates of Lung Adenocarcinoma).

The so-called light cigarettes differ from the usual ones in that their filter has a set of holes that contribute, as the manufacturers say, to the purification of smoke from tar, nicotine and other carcinogens before entering the lungs. Through these holes, according to the idea of the creators, fresh air enters the tobacco smoke, "diluting" it and making it less dangerous.

"Tobacco companies have once again deceived doctors and smokers into thinking that such cigarettes are safer for health. The data we have obtained show that there is a very clear link between these vents and the epidemic of adenocarcinoma in the last two decades," said Peter Shields from Ohio State University in Columbus (in a press release Rise in Lung Adenocarcinoma Linked to Light Cigarette Use – VM).

Shields and his colleagues analyzed data collected by the US health services and other groups of scientists since the mid-1960s, when such cigarettes appeared on sale. In addition, it was possible to gain access to internal statistics and research of tobacco companies, which in total expanded the scientific database to more than three thousand publications and documents.

Their analysis revealed an interesting trend. The incidence of almost all smoking-related diseases gradually decreased due to a decrease in the amount of tar and other harmful substances in the smoke. However, this did not concern the likelihood of developing adenocarcinoma. Shields' team concluded that the main reason for this was light cigarettes.

"The filter changes the way tobacco burns, enriching the smoke with carcinogens, and smokers smoke longer and more often, which allows the smoke to penetrate into the deep parts of the lungs, where adenocarcinoma usually forms," the scientist continues.

All this, according to Shields, speaks of the need for an early and complete ban of such filters and notification of smokers about the dangers of smoking light cigarettes, which they do not suspect.
