Owners of weak muscles risk dying prematurely

Elena Subbotina "Rossiyskaya Gazeta"Muscle weakness in adolescents may be one of the factors, along with obesity and hypertension, affecting health and future life expectancy, Swedish doctors believe.

For 24 years, they conducted a large-scale study involving more than 1 million teenage boys, writes the BBC (Early death link to muscle power). They found that those with weak arm and leg muscles were more at risk of early death than strong people. At the same time, scientists point out that large muscles, like those of bodybuilders, are not a guarantee of a long life. But the condition of the muscles is important – the stronger they are in principle, the better it affects health. So, thin and overweight men with weak muscles have less chance of a long life compared to people who are overweight, but they have great muscle strength.

During the study, 26,145 (2.3 percent) participants died: mainly due to some serious injury or illness, for example, cancer, cardiovascular disease or stroke; suicide cases were also recorded. It was found that adolescents who had above-average muscle strength at the beginning of the study had a 20-35 percent lower risk of becoming victims of early death as a result of heart disease and in general. The risk of death from suicide for them was reduced by 20-30 percent. They were also 65 percent less likely to be at risk of mental illness, such as schizophrenia and depression.

According to experts, 16-19-year-old young people with the lowest index of muscle strength had the highest risk of dying before they reached the age of 55.
