Diabetes and cancer: new data

Scientists have named a disease that increases the risk of developing cancer

RIA News

Diabetes mellitus significantly increases the risk of developing cancer. This conclusion was reached by an international group of scientists from Australia, the UK and the USA.

The results are published in the journal Diabetologia (Ohkuma et al., Sex differences in the association between diabetes and cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis of 121 cohorts including 20 million individuals and one million events).

The researchers analyzed data from 20 million patients and found that type I and type II diabetes "is a risk factor for all types of cancer in both women and men."

The researchers found some differences in the results obtained depending on the gender of the participants. Thus, women with diabetes are 27% more likely to get cancer than those who do not suffer from endocrine diseases. For men, this figure is 19%. The study showed that diabetic women are at risk: they are more likely to develop malignant tumors in the kidneys, oral cavity, stomach, as well as leukemia. The only exception in this case is liver cancer, to which men are more susceptible.

"In general, it was estimated that women with diabetes have a 6% higher chance of getting any form of cancer than men," the paper says.

The probability of developing oncological diseases in each individual case is determined not only by the gender of the patient, but also by the localization of the tumor, experts say.

According to one of the authors of the study, Dr. Sanne Peters from the University of Oxford, there are several reasons why women and men get sick differently. Thus, representatives of the weaker sex are on average two years longer in a prediabetic state with impaired glucose tolerance, the specialist said.

"We know that historically, women often do not receive sufficient treatment when the first symptoms of diabetes appear, are less likely to undergo intensive therapy and do not take the same amount of medications as men," he said. Peters portal EurekAlert.
