Research by scientists from The University of South Australia shows that regular screening for bowel cancer reduces the mortality rate by up to 45%. The examination should include a laboratory stool test for latent blood and a colonoscopy.

Article by Li et al. Pre-diagnostic colonoscopies reduce cancer mortality - results from linked population-based data in South Australia published in the journal BMC Cancer.

The team analyzed the data of almost 13 thousand people and confirmed the importance of primary laboratory screening.

The analysis of feces for hidden blood plays a key role in the early detection of cancer before the first symptoms, the scientists stressed.

A single analysis reduced mortality by 17%, a double test reduced the indicators by 27%, and a triple – by 45%.

If the laboratory test gives a positive result, then a colonoscopy is prescribed to the patient. Such a screening procedure significantly reduced mortality in patients in the early stages, the study notes.

Colorectal cancer most often occurs after the age of 50 with the same degree of risk in men and women. The main factors provoking the development of a tumor are high-calorie unbalanced diet, sedentary lifestyle, bad habits, as well as chronic inflammatory bowel diseases.
