Do not refuse vaccination!

In the last decade, the issue of vaccination of children has become one of the most controversial issues, rising to the same level as the problem of abortion and euthanasia. After the refutation of the theory of children with autism due to vaccination against mumps, rubella and measles, published in 1998 by British researcher Andrew Wakefield and the court verdict rejecting the claims of parents of autistic children to the US state vaccination system, an active information campaign in defense of vaccinations begins in different countries of the world.

A well-known American pediatrician and one of the creators of the rotavirus vaccine, Dr. Paul Offit, who wrote the book "False Prophets of Autism" at the time, which caused outrage among apologists of the Wakefield theory, in an interview with a representative of the Reuters news agency, said that after the publication of the book, he and his children were threatened. Offit in his book sharply criticized organizations that agitate parents not to vaccinate their children for fear of autism.

The doctor actively fought the campaign against vaccination, and he was accused of taking bribes from pharmaceutical companies and harming children. "We have never received money from Merck," he stressed. "The research was paid for by the US National Institutes of Health."

According to the doctor, a lot of people supported him, including parents of autistic children. So, the mother of a ten-year-old autistic person in a letter to the author of the book said that she convinces the parents of her children's classmates of the need for vaccination. "I'd rather deal with autism than bury my child after a preventable illness."

However, few supported Offit. One day, according to the doctor, an unknown person called him at home, who stated: "We all want the best for our children. And you want the best for your children, Will and Emily, who go to Kenwood School, and then hung up. "He really scared me," the pediatrician admits. Offit himself is one of the creators of the Rotatec rotavirus vaccine, which is produced in the USA by the pharmaceutical company Merck and Co.

He said that he started working on the vaccine together with other doctors after in 1979 he had a chance to save a nine-month-old girl who was in critical condition due to rotavirus. The baby had severe vomiting and diarrhea, she was unconscious from dehydration, and doctors tried to insert a catheter into her vein to relieve dehydration. The doctors' efforts were in vain, the girl died.

"We were all just shocked that someone died from viral diarrhea. The mother of the child was outside the door of the ward, and after all this, you need to open the doors and invite her to look at her dead daughter, who was recently a healthy nine–month-old girl," Paul Offit shared.

Recall that the British researcher Andrew Wakefield is considered the founder of the worldwide campaign against vaccinations. In 1998, he published a study report in a prestigious medical publication, indicating that after triple vaccination (measles-rubella-mumps), many children became ill with autism. A few weeks ago, the British press published information that Wakefield falsified the results of the study: his statement about the appearance of problems with the development of the child within a few days after vaccination was confirmed by any medical documents. In many of the cases, the diagnosis of "autism" was made to the child before vaccination. At the same time, according to statistics, one out of every 150 children is diagnosed with autism in one form or another.

The refusal of vaccination provoked by Wakefield led to a sharp increase in morbidity and mortality from diseases seemingly defeated by humanity. If in 1998 there were only 56 cases of measles in the UK, then in 2008 there were more than 1300. In 2007, 197,000 people worldwide died from measles. Viral meningitis is also returning, which can also be prevented by timely vaccination.
(In fact, the frequency of enterovirus meningitis is increasing, against which, unfortunately, there are no vaccines. But the number of bacterial meningitis caused by meningococci of serogroups A and C, pneumococci and hemophilic B infection is growing. It is really possible to prevent them with timely vaccination – VM.)

Supporters of the refusal of vaccinations believe that doctors and medical staff of public hospitals are in collusion with vaccine manufacturers and hide from people the alleged danger of vaccination. Paul Offit and other experts, in turn, are convinced: in the modern world, people too rarely witness the death of children from diseases, so they cannot assess the level of need for vaccination.

14 modern vaccines, which are mandatory for children in the United States, contain fewer immunological agents than two vaccines in 1980, he emphasizes: "Trillions of bacteria constantly live on the surface of your body, you received them immediately after birth and can cope with them. Vaccines are a drop in the bucket."
